In the foreground are the engraved boulders and circular stainless steel structure of the Labor Legacy Monument, dedicated to all the workers who labored on building the city of Detroit. Beyond is the highrise One Woodward Avenue, designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki, and completed in 1963. Yamasaki was principal designer in another project--The World Trade Center in New York City. The three story sheets of glass that enclose the white marble lobby were the largest in the world at the time of construction. When Woodward One was completed, it was the tallest all-welded steel frame building in the world. It's appearance lends the viewer to think that it may have been a model for The World Trade Center, constructed several years later, |
